Bricked Yellowstone

Brick

Yellowstone tablets sometimes fail to power up after powering down, typically after its battery runs out. A large Tango Core or other OTA software update can kill the battery and leave the system bricked. At least 25% charge is required for a Tango Core OTA update to initiate.

Recovery

Recovering a brick by charging, when that is all that is necessary, can require only some special sequences of pressing the power button, or additionally a more powerful charger through the charging dock.

Normal Recovery

  1. Connect the tablet's USB to a USB charger (or PC port) supplying at least 5VDC/500mA.
  2. Hold the power button down for 20 seconds.
  3. If the tablet neither powers up nor shows a battery icon, release for 10 seconds, then hold again for 20 seconds. If still no power up or battery icon while held, repeat but hold for 30 seconds, release 10 seconds, hold 30 seconds.
  4. If a battery icon shows but the tablet doesn't power up, leave it to charge for at least 15 minutes, then try the power button hold/release/hold again (each of 20s and 30s). If it doesn't power up, but its battery icon shows a larger charge than before, repeat hold/release/hold after at least another 15 minutes charging.

Radical Recovery

  1. Connect the tablet's charging dock (included in the original tablet packaging) to a 12VDC/2A (or greater than 2A) external power supply (not included with the original tablet).
    1. The power supply connector must have dimensions of: Outer Diameter (OD) 5.0mm; Inner Diameter (ID) 2.1mm . A Radio Shack Adaptaplug model K has those dimensions.
  2. Charge for at least 24 hours. Possibly as much as 30 or 40 hours, or possibly even more if the tablet's battery was in bad condition before it bricked (eg. from many recharge cycles, or poor charging power quality).
  3. Hold the power button down for 20 seconds.
  4. If the tablet neither powers up nor shows a battery icon, release for 10 seconds, then hold again for 20 seconds. If still no power up or battery icon while held, repeat but hold for 30 seconds, release 10 seconds, hold 30 seconds.
